A while back Mike Macleod came across a funny little Green 1x2 brick with an S stamped on the studs. It's not clone but a genuine LEGO brick. However no one has any idea why it has an S instead of the LEGO logo on the studs or where it could have come from. Well I think I may have stumbled across a possible explanation. Have a look at this.

Bayer of Germany it seems is one of LEGO's plastic suppliers. And they are known to test mold bricks to try out new plastic formulas and such often marking the bricks with a letter (A, B, C, etc.) to differentiate which bricks came from which batch. Take a look at the letter on the studs of this brick.

Seems very similar to our mystery S brick. Could this be where it came from?

I'm familiar with the Bayer Bricks because I've spoken to Maxx on the BrickLink forum many times. He collects 2x4 bricks including the Bayer ones. I'll ask him about the S stamp but honestly I have only encountered the ones with the C on them.

I contacted Maxx in the Netherlands and he says there are no Bayer Bricks with an S on them, also Bayer only made 2x4s. If you have a picture of this brick in question, he would like to see it.

Could it be from the early Samsonite partnership?

The "S" brick is a 2X4 green brick, modern mold with bridging and an unused 5 digit LEGO ID number. Maxx was forwarded the photos from Tom 1 1/2 years ago. TLG employees we have spoken with are unfamiliar too. Best guess so far is a test run via China. The mystery continues...
