Bricks Adventure 2011
Ladies and gentleman, next week I will be the PennLUG ambassador to HKLUG (Hong Kong Lego Users Group), attending Bricks Adventure 2011. While I'm a bit bummed that I can't make it to shows with you like BrickMagic and possibly KidsFest in Philly, I'm really stoked to be attending an international event on the other side of the world.
There are a lot of talented builders in this group, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll have on display. Unfortunately, I didn't really bring much with me in the way of Lego; a Build-a-Buzz figure, some collectible minifigs, my Civil War siege mortar, some Lego books/magazines, and shirts. So I will mainly be a spectator as opposed to a participant. These guys are really nice, too, and it's such a relief to know that I'll be going somewhere where I won't be completely on my own.
I wasn't 100% sure whether or not I could go...Hong Kong is not cheap. But then I realized that this may be the one time in my life that I am in this part of the world, so it will be worth it. I spent the equivalent of around $690 on hotels and a roundtrip flight. It would have cost less for me to fly as far south as I could in mainland China and then take the train from there, but I didn't want to deal with the hassle.
So I'll be flying out on the 16th, stay there for 4 nights, and come back on the 20th. I will take lots of pictures, promise.
Come out here if you can.

Only $690 on an trans-Pacific flight and four nights in Hong Kong? That may be a lot of bricks, but it's darn cheap as international travel goes (I scan the Liberty Travel listings on the back page of the Sunday newspaper). Philadelphia-Japan, e.g., is $1,000-plus nowadays. Heck, you can spend more on a few days in Orlando.
I hope you're earning airline miles. May the winds smile on you, and have fun!

Sorry for my super delayed response. I'm in China, so I didn't have to fly from the states. Otherwise, the flight would have cost me much more. I could have saved money by flying domestically to Shenzen (which borders Hong Kong) and then taking the train from there to Hong Kong. However, I didn't want to deal with the hassle, so I took a direct flight. The whole trip was worth it.P_Thorne wrote:Only $690 on an trans-Pacific flight and four nights in Hong Kong? Brothers-Brick Wrap-up
Nannan asked me to do a write-up on the exhibition for The Brothers Brick. I've been super busy, so excuse the late timing and my lack of posting around here. heh And I still have to do a BrickJournal interview with some of the Hong Kongers. In any case, if you want to read the Brothers Brick feature, here it is:

Re: Bricks Adventure 2011
Yeah read that, thought it was cool that you wrote it. It was a nice surprise.
Re: Bricks Adventure 2011

That was definitely awesome Matt. Great Job on the write up and we're all looking forward to your BrickJournal article.

Re: Bricks Adventure 2011
I almost thought I wouldn't be able to make it out to Hong Kong for the show, so I was a little worried. Thankfully, it worked out in the end. I'd really like to make it out to a Taiwanese meeting or event but, seeing as how the roundtrip airfare costs almost 1 month's pay, I won't be doing that.
The article should be interesting when it's finished. This guy's stuff will blow you away.
There was also a cool event minifig that I haven't taken pictures of yet. When I do, I'll post them here.
