KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
Hello,
We are planning on giving away a Mini model to kids 12 and under during our exhibition. It will be similar to what the LEGO stores do every month. I am looking for a set that will cost less than a dollar to produce. Please post your ideas here.
The other kit we are looking for will be an Event Kit. It should cost about $5 in parts and we will sell it for $10. It would be nice if the first year set was representative of Pennsylvania. But do not limit yourself. We can try any subject for this kit.
I would like for us to make a selection by January 1 so that we can work on getting the parts for these two kits.

Just throwing ideas out here because I'm not sure how easy/difficult/expensive these would be...

I'm sure I'll have some more ideas

I think the Liberty Bell is a good idea, but I know the KOP Lego Store did one for their grand opening.
Other things to consider might be Benjamin Franklin related? (Kite/key?)
I do like the skyline idea though.

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
Hmmm ...
I think I was not clear. I am looking for sets and not simply ideas.
At $.05 a piece, the small MOC will need to be less than 20 parts. The larger can be about 75-100 pieces since some parts will probably be more costly. And there will be a cost to box and label the set as well as print instructions.

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
It's not really PA related, but it's kind of whimsical:
http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/8464
Unfortunately, it's kind of part heavy for such a small model and the monkey is kind of pricey (some guy has over 200 on BL for $0.75 each). With some color changes and axing out the minifig and Brickarms parts and suitcase, maybe it would fall closer into budget? Anyone think it can be refined? Pennlug colors, perhaps?
I know the terms of CUUSOO state that you can't sell your idea (can't even be featured in a book) while you're idea is submitted. As I understand it, the creator reserves the right to take down the project in which case there shouldn't be a problem.

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
Oops, sorry Tony. Didn't think there were any sets for $1 so that you wanted ideas. Figured we had to create one and then purchase the parts for the goodie bag. Likewise for the event kit...$5 sets have 50-75 pieces in actual sets, not 200.
Or am I still not understanding what you want?

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
I know that you said you were looking for physical models, but I feel like throwing an idea out there because my Lego is packed away and will be for quite awhile. I don't have time to tinker around lately.
For the kit that's for sale, I would suggest trying a cannon. Something like that shouldn't be too part heavy or costly. Plus you could sell themed minifigs separately.
A cannon might have broad appeal because there are a lot of people interested in military history. With Gettysburg and Valley forge, it's an iconic piece of PA history, too!

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
On a related note, selling minifigs with the event logo printed on them would be cool.

I agree. I'll want a couple for myself...
This could be done one of (at least) two ways:
Tommy Armstrong can print 4 color images on white bricks/mini-figs (best).
OR
We can print stickers, cut them out and apply them ourselves manually (a bit tedious but much cheaper).

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
How about something simple like a car. TLG sells tons of vehicles every year so you know the market is there and I think it's probably more kid appropriate. Plus I think there is probably more play value in a car. We could probably model one off the old 80's style 4 wides. If we give out minifigs the car would have it's driver then.

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
That's a good idea, Mike. Not only is it appropriate for children, but there were a lot of auto manufacturers in PA back in the early days, one of which had been the cool little American Bantam cars in the 1930s (made in Butler, PA). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bantam Those would be fun to do but, with those curves, I'm afraid they might be a little part heavy.LEGO Dog wrote:How about something simple like a car. Way back in 2006, I made this little sports car, trying to go for an MGish look: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=167195
Sorry about the poor quality of the photos. I'll post better ones at a later point, but you can also see the car in front of Rob's house, here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/steampoweredbricks/7965382038/in/pool-pennlug/
Excluding the minifig and separating the tires from the wheels, it has 48 parts and could be modified to taste. It's simple and clean hopefully wouldn't be too expensive to get parts for. They could even be offered in multiple colors.
Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
Some car parts (wheels, axels and the occasional wheel-well) are cheaply available in Pick-A-Brick at KOP, which is all the more reason to go with a car.
Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
Hi,
I am turned off by the idea of doing a car. But I am intrigued by your car, Matt. I would like to examine it if you could get it to the next meeting.

I don't know if this is what you want but it would be in the price range and be easy enough for me to mock-up

I just thought maybe a mini - SEPTA train?!
I made a small and Larger MOC of the LOVE statue it would work (the larger is way better) to but I have a feeling the men-folk in the group don't want to get cutesie - But hey, Trains! I will build a couple...

Re: KBE - Mini Build, Event Kit
I realize this is way late, so I apologize. I also noticed your other message about quitting the club. I haven't been able to make it to meetings for a long time, so I'm not really in the loop anymore. Anywho, if you're still active in the club and interested, I would be happy to mail the model out to you. I do not know when I can make it to another meeting.vyronwynter wrote:Hi,

If not, I wish you the best. You were always an important member of the club and all-around great person, too.
