Brickfair LEGO Store Discount not for Resale

I know every one should already be aware of this, but I thought I should pass this along anyway. This was part of a discussion on WamaLUG's newsgroup.

There is a Yahoo group for BrickFair vendors. Todd sent a note to everyone two months ago saying the Lego company believed some vendors were using the Brickfair discount to buy sets for their business, and that in the company's view this violated the spirit of their offer. Todd was emphatic about complying with Lego's request and asked every vendor for a promise that they would not buy anything for their business.

LEGO is very serious about the discount not being taken advantage of. Anything bought under the Brickfair or any other convention discount is absolutely not to be resold.

I always knew this and I don't want to mess with it. I same goes for the LUGBulk stuff. I will never intentionally sell any items I got through the LUGBulk program. Same goes for instore discounts from events. I also never had issue when they had the running of the bulls way back when with the dented boxes. I do suspect people bought them for resale, and even thought I saw some at the event.

It's always very poor when the few mess things up for the whole.

This goes beyond vendors at shows, LEGO bought with ANY discount from TLG at any event, window, special AFOL/LUG offers are not to be resold, eBayed or broken down into BrickLink stores. This comes from a long chat with LEGO store managers and employees I had a few months ago. We have a very good standing with TLG, let's keep it that way.

Otherwise phrased, discount-beneficiaries shouldn't be picking sets and PAB elements with the intention of immediately reselling. If, five years later, after having cycled the parts through a few models and storage-shuffles and mixing them with other purchases, you decide to downsize -- IMHO, I don't think TLG could object to that. Individual elements are fungible; kinda tough to track their provenance individually. (I wonder what the depreciation curve looks like? It must vary by color and shape.)

(Re: intentions, IIRC from early LUGBulk discussions, TLG wants AFOLs to use the elements in a cool MOC that promotes the brand, sooner rather than later; but best-laid plans and all that. "I can use these globes for space helmets! Oops, I got distracted and there was never an occasion to do a public space-themed layout." That is, results are probabilistic.)
