The general manager of the Barnes & Noble book store in Bryn Mawr (near Villanova) is running a special public event the weekend of July 16-17 (nine days from now), and would like DelVaLUG/PennLUG to participate -- because the store sells LEGO sets. (You may recall the expansion of B&N into toys about a year ago.) For context, the Delaware Anime Society has been invited to help with the comic book-themed Sunday. (I'll append further details later.)

I've warned him that many of us will be busy with BrickFair prep, but Mike M. has already registered his interest. I'm not too busy. Anybody else?

If we can't participate this month, then maybe later, because he does this on a regular basis.

I've suggested that, instead of stand-behind-MOCs, we might run active activities such as official LEGO board games, build-in-a-bag, or blind build. (If the latter party games, they should be playtested.) Apparently he gets 20-30 attendees to such events, so we won't have the usual crowd-management problems.

This sounds very intriguing. What kind of hours would we need to be there?

The B&N in Bryn Mawr closed a couple years ago (back when I lived there). Did they open up a new one? Where exactly is it? I can't find it on the bn.com.

Yeah, likewise. Are you sure you weren't talking to a Ghost, Phil?

Maybe he meant the Borders? I believe they're still open.

Interesting trivia: An employee at the Bryn Mawr Barnes & Noble once told me that store was the first B&N in the country to have a coffee shop in it.

It's actually Borders Books and Music

Bryn Mawr, Pa 19010

And your plan does sound interesting Phil. It would be great to see us get involved here.

I want to do something, but not in the beginning of August. I am on vacation, 2nd weekend is monthly meeting, 3rd weekend Evie's birthday, 4th weekend final planning/building for Steamtown. I suggested October since that is when we have some free time. Nate and I are in the planning stages of Railfest in Steamtown for Labor day weekend.

Cale is right, I used to do service work at this location. Trailer parking will be difficult. It's a small shopping center right in the middle of town.

The only reason to need a trailer would be to set up a train layout and for this type of thing I just don't see the point in that. I love to do the train thing Very Happy but I often fear it overshadows some of the other things our club is capable of. I think it would be nice to do more events that aren't some big production. Something with a smaller crowd that we can interact with on a more one to one basis, play games, show of all the little some times missed details of our MOCs and all the other fun things we usually don't get to do at a big event.

Yes, it's the Borders in Bryn Mawr (#30, one of the survivors). My mistake in the initial post.

Angelo A. Ferrarelli wrote on July 5, in part:
I was looking to do some activity dealing with LEGOS, since we sell them, and are pretty successful with them. Of what you mentioned, the party games sound great. [...] As for when, I would love it if you could make it the weekend of July 16-17. Both days would be great, but with your busy schedule, one day (Saturday, if possible) would work just as well. [...] If this time frame doesn't work, let me know what does, and you can be the event all to yourselves. And, yes, you can promote anything about your organization you want, including PhilCon. [...] We do company sponsored activities with LEGOS, and usually give out small freebies for the kids to build. I think something like your organization giving a demonstration and doing those games would really add some "pop" to our events. We have very good turnout for the events (usually around 15-20 participants), so this would be a good recruiting tool for you.

It looks like there's interest among us, but not this month, or on such short notice. Correct? As it happens, Saturday is suddenly not good for me, because I will have relatives visiting from Oklahoma -- and my six-year-old cousin wants to visit the KoP LEGO Store. Smile

I'll inform Mr. Ferrarelli that this coming weekend is probably impractical, but ask how much lead time he needs in case I get late "yes" responses from any of you. Also, I'll ask what hours the event would run.

Any chance that this will still happen, now that Borders is going out of business?

Is there a chance a subsequent event will happen?, Chris asks. I can email the store manager, but I suspect the shutdown schedule hasn't been determined yet. Maybe we should look for B&Ns or indie bookstores instead. (There's Chester County Books & Music, which is quite large.)

As it happened, the recent event (Sat-Sun 16-17 July, 1:00-5:00 p.m.) was comic book-themed. There were multiple presenters in different corners of the store -- a couple of local comic artists peddling their title, a circle of artists ("Xion"?), a contigent from the Delaware Anime Society. DAS had six people on hand, and three audience members showed up; the other sections didn't look well-attended either. I don't know if the store promoted the event anywhere beyond flyers on its front doors. (Logical outlets would be the Borders website, newspaper and radio community calendars, bulletin boards at nearby libraries.)

Also, this particular store has an odd restroom arrangement. The hanging signs on the ground and upper floors may read "restrooms" (plural) but in each case there's only a single unisex door-locking handicapped-accessible room, without even a sign on the door to confirm its function.

I think it's safe to say they won't be doing any special events ever again. The closing sales are supposed to start in a week or two.
