What: Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con
When: June 17-19, 2011 (Father's Day weekend)
Hours:
Friday, June 17, 2011 ...... 12pm - 8pm
Saturday, June 18, 2011 .... 10am - 7pm
Sunday, June 19, 2011 ...... 10am - 5pm
Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St, Philadelphia PA 19107
Info: www.wizardworld.com/philadelphia.html

I have recruited (just barely) enough people to staff the table, so we are a "go." Let the exhibit planning commence!

Wizard World is (simplest description) a comic book show -- plus related topics and guests. SF TV, horror, camp, cult, anime, professional wrestlers, collectible card game tournaments, "artists alley" and "fan tables." But not books -- visual media only. The guest list will give you the idea.

Most of the fan tables are towards the back. But DelVaLUG is special: the two years we appeared, we were placed near the front, in a 10x10-foot space (and next to the Star Wars costumers). So, lots of foot traffic.

Considerations:
* Layout of exhibit
* Business cards
* Photocopied handouts
* Key information on posters on easels
* Recording contact info of potential recruits
* Photos of viewers who match a minifig
* Headline photo ops (e.g., there are two actresses from Stargate Universe and I'm building a model of the Destiny) and release forms
* Staff coverage/relief (step away for bathroom, lunch, to enjoy the show)
* Earplugs (it can get noisy in there)

Wizard World Philadelphia (June 17-19, 2011) Empty Exhibit design guidelines

Post  P_Thorne Tue May 24, 2011 1:09 pm

An integrated, unified townscape is conceptually straightforward. But if we're displaying characters from multiple movies or time periods, and we're not content with "miscellany on a tabletop," we need a "framing device" such as:

* Museum
* Movie studio backlot
* Theme park. Extras: snack and souvenir stands.
* Studio backlot-style theme park, like Universal Studios. Extras: tram.
* Streetside attractions, like Las Vegas. Extras: bus shelters, traffic.
* Interdimensional limbo space

In 2007 and 2008 DelVaLUG did fairly conventional town-train layouts, albeit with an admixture of comic book buildings (Hall of Justice, Baxter Building, Wayne Manor), an emphasis on "Star Wars" and "Batman" sets and minifigs, plus customized superhero figs. Since most of PennLUG's town structures will be elsewhere, my concept is more flexible. For example, got spare spaceships? It'll be like a "miscellaneous MOCs" table at an AFOL con -- but! if we build walkways and place minifigs between (and staring at) the MOCs, we can call it a "spaceship museum." Or, got a Wild West street scene? I add an alien ship to it, and it's suddenly this summer's Cowboys and Aliens. (Yes, I'm freeze-framing the trailers.)

(I really need to draw a picture to clarify this.)

Displayed content may include the following. They'll need to be labeled so the audience (and staffers) can distinguish stock from custom. ("That's an official model from 2006 ... and this was built by one of our members, not here today; it's over 2000 pieces and took six weeks.")

* Official minifigs (in some kind of display case or bleachers to elevate them)
* Official sets
* Modified official sets (e.g., my "Build a Buzz" with extended limbs and detailed hands)
* Original models

Contributors: please list (or, if a long list, describe) what you have to contribute. (I've already got some lists by email.) If it's a long list (e.g., all official Star Wars sets), suggest subset-combinations that might be interesting. (E.g., evolution of the X-Wing, all TIE fighters.) If the list changes, please edit your original post -- this will keep the thread manageable. Photos are good, and some idea of its footprint (inches and/or studs). The WW-provided tables are, I think, 6x2 feet.

Wizard World Philadelphia (June 17-19, 2011) Empty "Spaceship museum" proof of concept

Post  P_Thorne Tue May 24, 2011 10:28 pm

Two spacecraft on stands, four pieces of modular walkway (two straightaways, a 4-node, and an angle), and sightseers. Ever been to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy annex to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum? It's like that.

This concept makes room for all the requisite funny kids-eye-level scenes: shutterbugs, groups posing for photos, placards clipped to the railings, security guard chasing droids, horseplay, etc. If some models are tall, or elevated to add a vertical element to the composition, the walkway can include ramps and upper tiers.

As I build them, my models for Wizard World will be in this Flickr set: WWP2011 WIPs. If you still need clarification on my thematic concepts, these will help.

Wizard World Philadelphia (June 17-19, 2011) Empty Furniture

Post  P_Thorne Wed Jun 01, 2011 1:27 pm

Turns out the 10x10-foot booths in 2007/08 were a fluke: Wizard assigns those when the show floor is undersold. This year they're sold out [1], so what we're getting are two adjacent Fan Table spaces. Here's our fan page, although as of Thursday we're not linked from the list of all fan groups.

Name banners: 2
Table size: 6 or 8 feet long, 24 inches deep, 30 inches tall, draped.
Floor easels: I have two of these, and they're coincidentally painted PennLUG blue.
Acrylic tabletop paperwork displays: I have these. Photos later.
Electricity: None.

[1] Sold out? This is a good thing, as the 2009/10 show floors looked a bit sparse; a recovery in pop fandom and the return of major exhibitors? Unless Wizard just reduced the offered parcels. Here's the show floor map, Hall D. Fan tables are in the 1000-2000 parcel range.

I saw some of the MOCs going to Philly and they look awesome. The Pizza Day on the Death Star has come along way since we first saw a few months ago. It's cool that a lot of summer related movie MOCs are going as well. I like the floating rock concept and can't wait to see how it is executed. Take some pics for us and we will see you guys in July.
