My latest MOC is the WMCA 570AM radio transmitter building in the swampy Meadowlands of New Jersey. I think it could be added to the industrial waterfront that Nate created.

Impressive! I love the cattails and how you made the dumpster.

Thanks. I wish I could take credit for the design of either of them. Dumpster is a blue version of one that came in a minifig impulse set, and Nate used those cattails in his industrial waterfront already. Maybe I'll bring the whole thing along to the February meeting, depending on how well I can pack it up and carry it to the train.

Hi Rob,

Very nice. It think this MOC would look great integrated into a water front landscape. Just don't forget the secreted mobster bodies.

I was already thinking of sticking a skeleton under the bridge and calling it Jimmy Hoffa. It also needs a lot more discarded tires in the water.

Fantastic MOC Rob. This will look sweet along the water front.

newbie question: For your MOC, do you typically buy the pieces you need separately, or just work with what you have already from other sets?

I think it varies by builder. Some people like to plan out their MOCs ahead of time and order pieces they need. I usually just build with what I have, unless I know I need something specific (for example, I needed to order some pieces for the curved front of the building). For some of my MOCs, I don't even have a clear idea of what I'm going to build. I start with a basic idea or color, and it evolves as I go through my bins or parts.

That's really cool. One of the things I like about lego pieces is that sometimes they can just inspire an idea that grows into something truly unique. So for this MOC in particular, did you set out to make the Swamp Station, or did it start out as a completely different idea?

Thanks. This particular MOC is based on the real WMCA radio transmitter building in Kearny, NJ. There's links to actual photos of the building on my Flickr page for the MOC:

My White Castle is my only other MOC modeled after a specific building, although it's a little bit of a hybrid of several different White Castle restaurants:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rgb/4705121582/in/set-72157624531069107/

This building was started by seeing how much I could reuse from the Prince of Persia sets:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rgb/4664189421/in/set-72157624531069107/

I had a bunch of dark gray arches and 1x1 columns so I wanted to see what I could do with them:

Here I wanted to do a municipal building in Art Deco style, with a central tower. I think the LA police headquarters was an inspiration:

Here I wanted to do an ornate house and started with the yellow arches (The white building was then built based off the yellow one):

I should add that thanks to the Cafe-Corner modular style, I don't have to build my buildings linearly from the ground up. I often start with the upper floors, then work my way down. For some of them, I made the ground floor last.

Those are all amazing! I love how much detail can be created; from various facade flourishes of the Loft Building to that quite impressive water fountain in front of the Art Deco City Hall. I also can't pass up mentioning the cameo of the Toy Story Army Man. When creating an MOC, do you have to deconstruct other models, or do you try to get the pieces you need first?

Thanks.

Once I'm happy with a building, I keep it intact so I can keep expanding the downtown section of the PennLUG layout (My home layout is full, until I can make more room for it). Some of these building have gone through several iterations where I've taken them apart and then rebuilt them. Here was my first pass at the Art Deco City Hall: https://pennlug.forumotion.com/t119-art-deco

So far I've only taken apart one early (and not very good) building because I needed the windows. I have taken apart some of my vignettes for parts.

I'm still trying to decide what do with various Lego sets I've assembled. I'm running out of shelves to display them on. Do I I try to find more space for them, pack them up, or just dismantle them for parts?

When I was originally envisioning the city hall, I wanted to do a whole war memorial in the center of the plaza with several army men raising a flag or something, but I decided to do a fountain instead and just use one army man off to the side.

Cool. I'm glad you went with the fountain. Smile

Was there a part of the WMCA that you were most excited to build?

Hey Rob, I realize that you were unable to do the radio tower in Red/White do to lack of color choice. Here is the set I was talking about that will have the Red sections in it. Not sure when it will be out, but hopefully before Brick Magic. If not, I would definatly think before Brickfair since we already have official photos.

It would be nice to use red and white for the tower, but even with the 6x6 red frame, I still need the triangular pieces for the top, and those are only available in yellow and dark green. Although I could come up with another way to do the pointed top of the tower. Those red pieces might have been nice on the bulk list along with the dark grey version.

Was there a part of the WMCA that you were most excited to build?

Surprisingly, the building itself wasn't as fun as I thought it would be. Other than the curved front corner, it's a rather plain building. The letters were fun to do. The back wall with the white and gray bricks was a bit of a pain. I think doing the bridge and swamp was the most interesting because I hadn't done a water scene before.

Am I measuring right? Is it 3 32 baseplates long? If so, that's good because it can sit on the lower level tables next to the port area. My plan for this year is to expand the waterfont area, and I want to be able to tie it into your MOC.

Yeah, the station and the sloped shoreline are the equivalent of a 48x48 baseplate and thevbridge and antenna are a 32x32 and a 32x16 baseplate. I can tweak things if needed. For instance, that 32x16 baseplate can be removed no problem.
